Guide

Sleep at the airport only when the clock demands it

An airport overnight is a tool for ugly hours. It is a waste of a city you came to see. This guide is the decision. The airport pages are the geography.

Destination overview

Patterns that justify it

A departure before about seven, a landing after eleven, or a connection that fails all justify a bed near the terminal. The precise cut-off is your risk tolerance plus winter. Pearson, Vancouver, Calgary, Montréal, Edmonton, and Halifax are written up separately because their distances are not the same.

Toronto Pearson has a rail link into the city, which tempts people to skip the airport hotel. The train does not run on hope. Check the hour.

Vancouver is on the Canada Line, which makes a downtown night more realistic than at some other fields. It does not make a 5 a.m. check-in kind.

Halifax and Edmonton are far enough from their downtowns that the airport hotel is often the honest call on a flight night. Calgary is the same logic, with Banff sometimes waiting the next day. Do not drive to the park after a red-eye.

Neighbourhoods

Where stays actually differ

Dawn departure

Sleep at the field. Enjoy the city on a different night.

Late arrival

Sleep at the field if baggage and immigration will spit you out when the city is asleep.

A full afternoon first

Sleep downtown. Move to the airport only if the morning is cruel.

Season

How the year changes the stay

Winter

Add time. Hotels that looked close in July are not close in a storm.

Summer

Storm delays. A flexible rate earns its keep.

The rest of the year

The decision is still the clock, not the foliage.

Choosing

Ticket, then bed

Open the airport that matches the ticket. Do not use Pearson as a metaphor for the country.

Then book with a seller. This guide does not hold rooms.

Questions

Before you decide

Are airport hotels quieter?

Not always. Runways and roads both make noise. Ask the property about the side of the building.

Do they all have shuttles?

No. Confirm hours.

Should I sleep in Banff after landing in Calgary at midnight?

No. Sleep in Calgary. Drive the park in daylight.
