Car or no car
Banff town can be done with shuttles in season. The other bases get difficult without a vehicle.
Guide
The Rockies are several hotel problems wearing one photograph. Banff town, Canmore, Lake Louise, Kananaskis, and Jasper are not interchangeable nights.
Destination overview
Banff is the walkable park town. You accept crowds in summer because dinner and the bus are close. The lakes people mean are not outside the door.
Canmore sits in the Bow Valley outside the park townsite. It is the quieter bedroom for people who will drive to the trailhead anyway. It is not a free copy of Banff.
Lake Louise is a hamlet and a lake. Stay there when the lake or that ski hill is the day. Stay in Banff when you want a town.
Kananaskis is a provincial park with lodge-scale stays and far less street life. Choose it for trails and night sky, not for restaurants on a grid.
Jasper is a long drive from the Banff cluster. Treat it as its own trip. Confirm current park conditions before you build a week around it.
Calgary is the air door. An airport hotel there is for the flight. It is not a mountain night. Read Calgary if the city itself is the point.
Neighbourhoods

Banff and Jasper require you to understand Parks Canada entry. Canmore is outside that townsite. Do not guess.
Banff plus Jasper in a short weekend is a windshield trip. Pick one valley.
Season
Ski chooses the base. Norquay, Sunshine, and Lake Louise are different drives from Banff town.
Some roads and trails are closed. The towns are calmer.
The famous photographs are busy. Go early in the day, and sleep where the evening still works.
Larch season is a second summer on the trails. Book the concept of the week before you obsess over the building.
Choosing
Write the daily trail or ski hill first. Put the hotel second.
If you want a city on one end, use Calgary as a city, not as a scenic stand-in.
Questions
Canmore is outside the Banff townsite. The drive between them is short. The rules are not identical.
