Ontario

London, the Ontario one

This is London, Ontario, a southwestern city on the Thames, not London, England. The hotel question is downtown, Richmond Row, or Wortley Village. YXU is the local airport. If your search crossed an ocean, you are in the wrong guide.

Destination overview

A southwestern city with that name

Hotels in London Ontario serve a regional city between Toronto and Windsor, with a downtown, a university, and neighbourhoods that have their own evenings. Richmond Row is the lively commercial strip people recommend for dinner. Wortley Village is a smaller, leafier high street to the south. Downtown is the office and arena core, useful for a meeting or an event and quieter or louder depending on the night. None of these is a stand-in for a European capital.

Western University pulls students and visiting families into the north end of the city on specific weekends. That is context, the way Queen's is context in Kingston. If your dates are a campus weekend, say so. If they are not, you can still enjoy the city without sleeping beside a residence. Toronto is the larger city to the east, a drive of roughly two hours in fair traffic. Windsor is the border city to the west.

YXU, London International Airport, handles a limited set of flights. Many travellers still arrive by car or via Pearson and the highway. The airport is a practical door when your ticket lands there, not a reason to confuse this London with any other. The search slug on this page is london-on so the Ontario city stays distinct. Use it that way.

Neighbourhoods

Three London evenings

Downtown

Downtown is the grid for conferences, the arena, and weekday offices. It works when the event is the trip. Evenings depend on what is on. A Tuesday can be thin. A concert night is not. You can walk a portion of it and still want a car or a ride for Wortley. Do not judge the whole city by one block of Dundas.

Richmond Row

Richmond Row is the restaurant and patio strip north of the core, the social answer to a London weekend. It is walkable in its own length and livelier than a residential street. Noise is the trade. If you want that energy, stay near it. If you want a village evening, it is the wrong pin even though the distance on a map looks modest.

Wortley Village

Wortley Village is the southern high street: local shops, a neighbourhood scale, and a calmer night. It suits a longer stay or a weekend that is not about the arena. You will ride or drive to a downtown morning. That is a fair trade if the village is why you picked London, Ontario, in the first place.

Accommodation

A regional city, not the other London

Downtown hotels

Useful for the core, the university edge, and a walkable evening.

Highway hotels

Fanshawe and the 401-side stays serve drivers and appointments on the edge.

Getting there

YXU, or the highway from Toronto

YXU sits in the northeast of the city, a short drive from downtown when your flight actually uses it. Many itineraries still involve Pearson or a car from Toronto, Hamilton, or Windsor. Highway 401 is the spine. Inside the city, downtown, Richmond Row, and Wortley are close and still worth naming, because you can pick the wrong evening in ten minutes.

There is no international confusion this guide can fully prevent except by saying the place plainly: London, Ontario. Trains connect the corridor. A car is the flexible tool for Wortley plus a downtown event. Hamilton and Guelph are other southwestern stays if this city was only a highway compromise.

Season

A southern Ontario year

Winter

Cold, snow, and a city that keeps going. Richmond Row still feeds people. The walk is less charming, and a car becomes more tempting than it is in May. YXU delays, when they happen, are ordinary winter aviation, not a London fog story from another country.

Spring

Unreliable and then suddenly green. Campus energy returns. Patios attempt the weather. A good time for Wortley if you want the city before summer festivals thicken downtown. A coat you can take off is the honest kit, and Wortley greens before the humidity arrives.

Summer

Humid, like the rest of southwestern Ontario, with festivals and a full Richmond Row. The Thames paths are the recreational extra. Downtown events can change parking. The city is pleasant when you have chosen a neighbourhood rather than a pin in a field.

Autumn

A strong neighbourhood season, colour in Wortley, and campus weekends that can surprise you. Cooler air makes walking the row more appealing than it was in a July humidity. Ask about those campus dates if sleep matters.

Western dates

Convocation and move-in change downtown. Ordinary weeks do not.

Choosing

Say Ontario before you say the neighbourhood

Hotels in London Ontario are downtown, Richmond Row, or Wortley Village. Pick one. A travel provider can filter amenities after that. This page will not recommend a property, and it will not pretend a room here is a room in England because the cities share a name.

If the border is the story, read Windsor. If the escarpment is the story, read Hamilton. If you only needed the name to be unmistakable, you are in the right guide. DVSVC does not reserve the stay.

Travellers

Trips that belong in this London

Event weekend

Downtown or Richmond Row, depending on whether the night continues after the arena. Ask about the block.

Neighbourhood stay

Wortley Village is the calmer high street. You will travel for a downtown morning, which is acceptable if you planned it.

Flying into YXU

Use the local airport when the ticket says so, then choose the neighbourhood. Do not stop searching once the city name matches a more famous one.

Practical

The name, the row, and the village

Confirm the province on the booking the way you confirm the dates. London, Ontario, has a Thames River, a row of restaurants, and a village street, and none of that will help you if the reservation is in another country. Inside the right city, Richmond Row on a Saturday is louder than Wortley. Downtown follows the event calendar more than either of them.

This site does not book hotels in London Ontario and does not publish rates. Choose the district, then continue with a property or a partner. Mention YXU if you are flying, and mention a campus weekend if your dates might be one. The guide exists so the Ontario city is obvious. The neighbourhood choice is still the part you have to make out loud.

Questions

Before you decide

Is this London, England?

No. This is London, Ontario, in Canada. Richmond Row, Wortley Village, downtown, and YXU are the local facts. If you needed the other London, this guide will not get you there. Confirm the province on the booking before you confirm the dates.

What is YXU?

London International Airport, northeast of downtown. Some trips use it. Others drive from Pearson or along the 401. Match the bed to the city, then match the morning to the airport you are actually using.

Which area is liveliest?

Richmond Row, especially on a weekend. Downtown depends on events. Wortley Village is the calmer neighbourhood street. Lively is not the same as a better stay. Pick the evening you want, then let a partner handle the building.

Will DVSVC reserve the room?

No. Name downtown, Richmond Row, or Wortley, then book with a property or a partner. There is no rate list here. YXU, if you are using it, belongs in the same conversation as the neighbourhood.
